Welcome to the Institute for Health Research and Policy

As the largest multidisciplinary research entity of the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Institute for Health Research and Policy is a vital part of Chicago’s Public Research University.

The Institute offers excellence in a suite of research resources to all UIC scientists studying health, well-being, and social and behavioral issues. In doing so, the Institute expands the opportunity for UIC colleges to see their faculty thrive in social and health sciences research and advances the research mission of the University. Learn more about our research.

Under the direction of Robin Mermelstein, PhD, the Institute provides the infrastructure and expertise needed to address the full life cycle of the research process, from developing and conceptualizing research ideas and building teams, through proposal submission, administrative management and financial oversight, to implementing research and disseminating results.

From our infrastructure and facilities, to our scientific resources and administrative services, the Institute focuses exclusively on the needs of researchers and their teams.

Researchers find strength, experience and a wide range of knowledge in the Institute’s staff — experts in timely personnel management and hiring, management of proposal submissions and grant portfolios, data security and accessibility, research data technologies, protection of human subjects, IRB review, communication of science for diverse audiences, research methodologies, and data management.

The University of Illinois Board of Trustees, with the approval of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, established the Institute in 1997 with a mission to serve the University of Illinois at Chicago by stimulating and supporting high-quality research to improve the health of communities, especially those burdened with the highest rates of social and health inequities.
