Federal Economic Stimulus Funds New IHRP Research

Several IHRP researchers received new grants from the National Institutes of Health with funding from the federal economic stimulus program.

More than $1.7 million in four grants was awarded in August and September 2009 to IHRP researchers through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, or ARRA.

Two of the grants fund entirely new studies; two grants supplement funding to studies already underway. Under terms of the funding, principal investigators Marian Fitzgibbon, Robin Mermelstein, Lisa Powell and Lisa Sharp will submit quarterly progress reports to NIH for their one- and two-year research projects.

As of October 12, UIC received a total of 119 grants funded by ARRA, according to the UIC Office of Research Services. The campus expects to receive more than $54 million through the funding act.
