Chalk Talk: Power Analysis through Simulation

Pugach, Oksana. (2016, Feb. 9). What You Need to Know about Power Analysis through Simulation. Institute for Health Research and Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago.

In some settings analytic power calculations may not be readily available. Moreover, in situations of complex study design such as longitudinal cluster-randomized clinical trials with non-continuous outcomes, there are no analytic formulae that would adequately capture data specifics. A straightforward alternative is to estimate power empirically via Monte Carlo simulation. In this Chalk Talk, Dr. Pugach discussed the effect on power of changing various simulation conditions controlled by the researcher.

Health and social science researchers at all levels, including postdoctoral investigators and doctoral students designing their own studies, are invited to this lecture.

"MRC Chalk Talks" are informal educational seminars about current methodological issues hosted by the IHRP Methodology Research Core. Intended for doctoral-level health researchers, these sessions are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m.

The IHRP Methodology Research Core provides consultation and expertise to investigators whose research home is the Institute for Health Research and Policy.
