Community-Based Promotion of Oral Cancer Early Detection in Black Men

Goal

To evaluate community-based strategies for improving early detection of oral and pharyngeal cancers in African American men.

Abstract

This study is designed to test promising strategies for improving early detection of oral and pharyngeal cancers (oral cancers) in the highest risk population: African American men. We propose to train medical care providers in an urban clinic serving African American men to perform early detection examinations and then to engage in a vigorous, community-based outreach effort to educate men in the community about oral cancer and to persuade them to avail themselves of the early detection services at the clinic.
