Bennett L. Leventhal, MD

Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, New York University
Dr. Leventhal is an internationally renowned psychiatrist who has held academic appointments at the nation’s leading medical schools and leadership positions for state and federal commissions as well as national psychiatric and medical societies. Dr. Leventhal has been a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners for over a decade and was instrumental in redesigning the USMLE, the national medical licensing exam. In 2008 he received the George Tarjan Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Leventhal was the Irving B. Harris Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Emeritus at the University of Chicago, where he worked for more than 25 years and also provided leadership as interim Chair of the Department of Psychiatry for eight of those years. During his tenure as Chair he facilitated the expansion of the clinical and research programs of the Department. Immediately prior to joining the NYU Child Study Center, Dr. Leventhal was a tenured professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he served as Director of the Center for Child Mental Health and Developmental Neurosciences. He was also co-investigator of the University’s Center of Excellence on Autism and co-directed the Illinois Statewide Autism Program.
