The Institute for Health Research and Policy is awarding three pilot grants to multidisciplinary teams of UIC health researchers.

Ben Gerber, assistant professor of medicine, is leading a feasibility study of a case management program coordinated by a pharmacist and community health promoter to improve diabetes treatment among Latinos. Ahsan Arozullah, associate professor of medicine, Lisa Sharp, assistant professor of psychology in medicine, Laurie Ruggiero, professor of community health sciences, and Daphne Smith, clinical pharmacist, are collaborating with Gerber on the project.

Claudia Hernandez
, assistant professor of dermatology, is developing a program led by lay health workers that aims to improve melanoma detection among Latinos. Her co-investigators on this project are Carol Ferrans, professor of nursing, June Robinson, professor of dermatology at Northwestern University, and Weihua Gao, biostatistician.

A team led by Jon Kassel, associate professor of psychology, are studying the effects of alcohol on attention span. Jennifer Wiley, associate professor of psychology, and Raul Gonzalez, assistant professor of psychiatry, join Kassel in this study.

The one-year projects are expected to generate pilot data supporting proposals for larger, more advanced studies that require federal funding. The grants will be awarded in September.

Pilot grantees will benefit from the excellent research infrastructure of the campus-wide and multidisciplinary IHRP, including consultation by the nationally respected members of the Methodology Research Core, and partake in its supportive intellectual environment.
