About the Center for Research on Health and Aging
The Center for Research on Health and Aging conducts applied research on health issues for older persons, including prevention, health maintenance, and the cost, quality, and effectiveness of health care delivery systems for this population, such as long-term care and managed care.
As a campus-wide center, the center brings together scholars throughout the university, especially those in health and social sciences.
As a founding member of the Health Aging Network, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the center collaborates with researchers throughout the United States.
The center also provides consultation and service to the community. The center coordinates the SHAPE walk, held annually in May on Chicago's lakefront and open to adults throughout metropolitan Chicago. It provides evaluation expertise to Illinois public health agencies.
The center mentors and supports pre- and post-doctoral fellows interested in the health of older adults through the Gerontological Public Health Training Program, funded by the National Institute on Aging. The center fosters the development of new research in healthy aging by offering pilot grants through the Midwest Roybal Center for Behavior Change and by supporting new investigators in their pursuit and completion of career development grants, or K awards.
