About the Center for Health Services Research
From October 1998 through 2006, the Midwest Center for Health Workforce Studies measured, evaluated and examined critical issues effecting selected health professions in Illinois, the Midwest, and the nation. The center, under the direction of Judith Cooksey, MD, MPH, and later, Surrey M. Walton, PhD, developed expertise in these areas:
- Measurement and evaluation of the health workforce, with a particular focus on secondary data quantitative analysis as well as qualitative research methods to enhance the quality and value of the research
- Health workforce studies on some states in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regions V (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin) and VII (Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas) and the nation
- Access to care for underserved populations
The Center for Excellence in the Economics of Health Promotion operated in partnership with the University of Chicago's Department of Economics, the UIC School of Public Health, and the Illinois Department of Public Health from 2004 to 2008. This center fostered the development and application of economic methods in the study of health behaviors, health promotion initiatives, and health disparities.
